About the artwork
Ah To created an artwork for the Hong Kong Film Festival UK 2023, inspired by the fascinating coincidence of British and Hong Kong streets sharing the same names. The piece explores the emotional journey of an outsider searching for familiar traces in a foreign land.
Before leaving Hong Kong, he lived on Warren Street in Tai Hang, where he participated in the annual Fire Dragon Dance every Mid-Autumn Festival. However, after relocating to the UK, he experienced loneliness and unease in an unfamiliar environment. Upon discovering a nearby Warren Street Station, the familiar yet foreign feeling overwhelmed him—like a moment of temporal overlap between Hong Kong’s colonial past and modern Britain.
His artwork captures the complex entanglement of migration, cultural identity, and belonging—the yearning to integrate into a new environment while refusing to lose one's cultural roots. It reflects a delicate balance between two places, a state of in-betweenness. Through his creation, Ah To transforms this unspeakable contradiction and longing into a visual form, making his artwork a spiritual refuge for those far from home. It also mirrors the shared experiences of Hongkongers scattered across the world.
